Last year, I embarked on a captivating journey, donning various hats – from a nurse and social worker to a scientist, pedestrian, biker, artist, and even a musical performer. Sounds intriguing, doesn't it? Yet, these weren't permanent roles; just different characters I embraced as a background actor for a day or two.

As I reflect on this experience, it struck me how frequently we stifle our hidden talents in the pursuit of "figuring out what we want to do with our lives." External influences, whether from parents, bosses, friends, or societal expectations, often dictate our career paths. But what if we could break free from these predefined roles and explore the dormant talents within us?

Think about your current career path. External influences likely played a role in steering you in a certain direction. However, these influences only scratch the surface of our true potential. What if, by stepping back from our current roles and shedding carefully crafted resumes, we could unearth untapped talents waiting to be unleashed?

After two decades in Talent Management, I found energy in trying on roles I wasn't qualified for. This echoed my early career days, where I took on various roles with little experience or training. While these jobs might not be resume-worthy, each one contributed to my growth, fueled curiosity, and provided a decent livelihood.

However, a shift occurred when I entered the corporate world. Suddenly, my career development wasn't solely in my hands; it became the responsibility of my boss, the Talent Management team, and the organization. While their intentions were to help me succeed, it inadvertently transferred ownership of my career to external entities focused on their needs rather than mine. Along the way, I set aside many interests and talents to hone skills identified as valuable, in exchange for higher ratings, promotions, and increased pay.

From my perspective, the long-term cost of that exchange was not worth it.

Why do we entrust the responsibility for our talents to organizations designed to prioritize their interests? It's time to rethink this approach and shift from Talent Management to Talent Empowerment.

Talent Empowerment places the responsibility for career development back into the hands of the true owners – the employees. We don't need someone managing our talents; we need our talents nurtured.
